Frank S. Robinson talks about his book The Case for Rational Optimism. He says his book is not only the ultimate “feel good” book – but much more. It not only shows how life and the state of the world are good and getting better, but explains the reasons, and why they will continue toward a bright future. This comprehensive "big picture" analysis brings in evolutionary biology, neuroscience, psychology, sociology, economics, and a keen sense of history. A fun read, down-to-earth with dashes of humor, it challenges many commonly held ideas.
Frank S. Robinson is a graduate of Queens College and New York University School of Law, receiving his JD degree in 1970. From 1970 to 1997, he worked at the New York Public Service Commission, including twenty years as an Administrative Law Judge. Robinson is the author of four previous books: Albany’s O’Connell Machine (reissued as Machine Politics); Children of the Dragon (Avon Books); Confessions of a Numismatic Fanatic, (Clio’s Cabinet) and Life, Liberty, and Happiness (Prometheus Books), which won a 2006 Spooner Award. Robinson lives in Albany, New York with his wife, the poet Therese Broderick and their daughter, Elizabeth.

This show we explore important business lessons learned with special guest Dal LaMagna. One of the best sources I found was a book written by Dal LaMagna entitled Raising Eyebrows. Dal is a self-described “compulsive capitalist” who had his share of failures that he discusses in his book that ultimately helped him learn what works and what doesn’t. Every time one of his businesses flopped, he just got smarter. He eventually had an incredible aha moment which turned into a multi-million dollar business called Tweezerman...http://www.raisingeyebrows.com

The inventions of Woody Norris run the gamut, encompassing the worlds of medicine, transportation, entertainment, and electronics. He also won the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize for Revolutionizing Acoustics. Inventions yet to come will revolutionize additional arenas. Woody draws on the latest technology as it evolves, combines it with radical new concepts, and then develops exciting new inventions from this blend of technology and vision. Imminently practical, he is intimately involved in the development of the prototypes and production models of his inventions. He also tracks his products through the manufacturing and marketing processes, all the way to their final marketplace.
Woody is such an inspiration! As Woody says, “There are classes to inventing. It isn’t limited to science and technology. Writers, actors, cooks and artists are all inventors. In 2005, working mother Sari Crevin created the very first prototype of SippiGrip in San Ramon California. Sari was becoming frustrated when her 1-year-old son, Jake, would throw his sippy cup to the floor from his high chair, stroller and car seat. Sari was constantly picking up the cups that were either getting dirty or getting lost. “Necessity really was the mother of invention and I could not find any product, in stores or on-line, that met my needs,” Sari remembers. Hence, the SippiGrip was born.
After an evolution of prototypes, research and testing of the SippiGrip, Sari formed BooginHead LLC. in
September 2007 and dedicated herself to launching the new and useful product for parents - and for parents everywhere she has helped end the cup throwing game! www.booginhead.com

Glenn talks with Rick about the books he wrote and how to get kids excited about science and technology. Don't miss this show!
Glenn Murphy began his career in science communication studying Genetics at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He then lived for two years in Tsukuba “Science City”, Japan, where he studied Japanese and taught at a public high school. He moved back to the UK in 2002 to read for a Masters in Science Communication at London’s Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. Thereafter, he wrote news and features for the journal Nature, and went on to train and manage an informal learning team at the National Museum of Science and Industry, London.
There, he consulted on exhibitions, shows and publications for the museum, and also wrote scripts for regular science shows aired on BBC digital radio. This led him to write his first popular science book, Why Is Snot Green? in 2006, which quickly became a UK children’s best-seller. This was shortly followed by Inventions in 2007, and A Kid's Guide to Global Warming in 2008. He has since authored 10 more published children's books on the subjects of science, technology, conservation and green issues.
Glenn remains fiercely devoted to informal learning, and to public engagement with science & technology, and looks forward to many more exciting projects and opportunities.

Author of the book Fixing My Gaze. When neuroscientist Sue Barry was fifty years old, she took an unforgettable trip to Manhattan. As she emerged from the dim light of the subway into the sunshine, she saw a view of the city that she had witnessed many times in the past but now saw in an astonishingly new way. Skyscrapers on street corners appeared to loom out toward her like the bows of giant ships. Tree branches projected upward and outward, enclosing and commanding palpable volumes of space. Leaves created intricate mosaics in 3D. With each glance, she experienced the deliriously novel sense of immersion in a three dimensional world. Barry had been cross-eyed and stereoblind since early infancy. After half a century of perceiving her surroundings as flat and compressed, on that day she was seeing Manhattan in stereo depth for the first time in her life. Learn about Dr. Barry’s remarkable life changing story.
Dr. Barry is a professor of neurobiology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Mount Holyoke College. She speaks regularly to scientists, eye doctors, and educators on the topic of neuronal plasticity.

Second Guest Country Music Star Eric Dodge....
Eric Dodge discovered his passion for singing in the most heartfelt of ways. While always having a strong love for music, his greatest fear was to share that passion publicly. On September 11th, 2001, as our great country suffered a terrorist attack, Eric was on a cruise ship outside of Mexico. That fateful day was when Eric made his decision to no longer be afraid. He stepped up to the microphone aboard the ship to share his voice and love of music. He was no longer willing to let his fear keep him from what was truly his gift to the world. He opened up his heart and sang Garth Brooks' song "The Dance". After his moving performance, a passenger approached him to let him know how much she had loved the song. She encouraged him to pursue a singing career. Just as many others were changed by the events of 9/11, Eric took her words to heart and decided to follow his heart into the world of country music. www.ericdodge.com
