It was the summer of 1993. Scott Martin, a healthy 35 year old, was the head soccer coach at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. He had been invited by Nike to speak at their national soccer camp outside Chicago. After a night of alternating fever and chills, he left camp to visit his mother in nearby Janesville. Seeing that Scott was quite ill, his step-father took him to the emergency room at the local hospital. Scott was told to drink Gatorade for the dehydration, take Tylenol for the pain, and return home.
When his symptoms became worse, he returned to the hospital the next morning. This time, blood work revealed that he was in the midst of kidney failure and becoming more septic with each passing hour. He was quickly moved to the Intensive Care Unit where he was hooked up to machines to help him breath and placed into a medically induced coma. His condition continued to deteriorate, eventually requiring that he be put on full life support. Scott would awake to find that his hands and parts of his feet had been amputated. “Moving Forward in Reverse” is the book that Scott and CoryAnne Hicks wrote to share his story with the world.
